Welcome to March

A gesture against the wild,
The ungovernable sea of grass;
A place to remember love in,
To be lonely for a while.

It is the old kingdom of man,
Answering to their names,
Out of the soil the buds come,
The silent detonations
Of power wielded without sin.
R. S. Thomas

February news

The Schlumbergera truncata (commonly known as the Christmas cactus) has adorned  the porch with it’s pink trumpet-like flowers since November.  Like the yellow Winter Jasmin covering the back garden shed with it’s floral bounty from November to February each year, they are an unfailing annual delight and brighten the darker days.

Tulip bulbs are already showing spears of pointed leaves through the cold earth which gives us hope for the longer days and better weather to come. As we move into the month of February we look forward to Lent and an early Easter at the end of March.

Priory Ramblers have continued to tramp the countryside in all weathers.

Tuesday 29th January – Bible reading Group meet at 18 Emerald Road.  Tel 654403.

News for November

Late Roses, Conkers and Fir cones…

As we say a reluctant farewell to the last roses and dahlias in the garden the conkers and the fircones drop from the trees and remind us of the constant cycle of beauty, death and renewal in our world.  Our concern about the expected severity of the coming Winter weather may be tempered by looking ahead to the possibilities of the colours and perfumes of the Spring flowers.  Bulbs and Wallflowers planted this month will thrive in the freezing ground as part of their necessary development and reward us with their bounty in the new year.

Messy Church holds its first session on Wednesday 31st October at 2 30 pm.  Mums and children, Dads and Grandads are all welcome to share an afternoon of friendship, food and worship until 4:00 pm in the Parish Hall and in Church.

The Communion service at 10 am on Thursday 8th November will be a Requiem for All Souls at which departed loved ones will be remembered by name. There is a list at the back of the church.  Please add names of those you wish to be remembered.

The second talk on the history of the Priory church will take place on Saturday 24th November at 730 pm in church when Hugh Garrod will speak about the period from Edward V1th to Elizabeth II.

Parish pocket diaries for 2013 are now available at the back of the church.

Parish Christmas cards are being prepared and volunteers are needed to help deliver them by hand to as many homes as possible before Christmas. Roads are listed at the back of church. Please sign up to which roads you can cover for delivery in your area.
It is hoped cards will be available on Advent Sunday 2nd December.

Baptisms and Weddings.  There are opportunities for those who would like to assist as sidespersons at Baptisms and Weddings. If interested please contact the Priory Office at 01582 477422.

Priory Bell Ringers are eager to teach young people to learn the art of church bell ringing.  It is an absorbing and interesting activity and a very challenging one. If interested please contact Alan Shepherd on 603238 or 07956 004 236.

The annual Christmas Bazaar in aid of church funds will be held in the Priory on Saturday 1st December.

Welcome to February

A note for February

by Ray Bryant

Brrr, the February Winter chill is with us and, as we battle to keep the business of life going despite the low temperatures, we can be thankful for warm clothing and homes and energy to keep out and about and resist the cold.  However, this period of rigour is part of the natural order and is, in fact, necessary for developing strength in life.

Horticulturists tell us that February is an important time of the year for plants that require winter chilling. Spring-flowering bulbs such as daffodils, hyacinths and some tulips typically require a period of winter cold in order to flower successfully.  Many fruit trees and bushes also need specific amounts of winter chilling to enable them to emerge from  the rigours of Winter into the transformed life of Summer’s leaves and  flowers and fruit.

Transforming Life is the title of our Lent Courses which commence in the week beginning 26 February and by giving ourselves time to “chill out” with our fellow Christians we can strengthen our faith and learn from each other. Venues and times are as follows:

  • Tuesday 28th February – Methodist Church, The Square – 2.00pm-3.30pm
  • Wednesday 29th February – St. Katherine’s, Katherine Drive – 7.30pm-9.00pm
  • Thursday 1st March – St. Fremunds, Westfield Road – 7.30pm–9.00pm
  • Friday 2nd March – Salvation Army 2.00pm –3.30pm
  • Ash Wednesday falls on 22nd February and there will be a Said Eucharist at 12.30 pm and a Parish Eucharist at 8.00pm, both at the Priory.

Other services at the Priory this month are:

  • 7th February – Pram Service- 2.00pm
  • 8th February – Ashton St Peters School Service – 10.00am
